“How can one man kill another and really know the reason why he does it, except that the man wears a different color uniform and speaks a different language”
I started reading this book one night I couldn’t sleep so I decided to read a quick short book to pass time. When I starts reading this book I was not expecting to read one of my favorite books of the year and maybe of my entire life.
In this book we follow Joey, a beautiful bay-red horse as he is sold to the army in the middle of the war and through courage and hope tries to find a way home to his true master, Albert.
I don’t know what I was expecting reading this book, but I was definitely not expecting this master piece. I was blown away by this book, I adored following Joey through his many adventures in the war and the periods in between. This book made me cry and made me love animals even further. While reading this book when Joey suffered I suffered, when he was happy I was happy. Every emotion felt by him is incredible transmitted and you can’t help but feel for him. The writing is simple and easy to understand, even though it is a short book you develop a connection with the characters and are able to feel empathy towards them (not all of them).
I would have never though that reading a book from a POV of a horse could feel so raw, emotional and heartwarming. Joey describes the horrors and hardships of the war and he goes through so many horrible things that you can’t help but ask yourself that maybe animals are truly better without us. This book is a perfect example of how we don’t deserve animals, how we put them against their will through so many awful things and all they still love us no matter what.
I was heartbroken and heartened when I finished reading this book I can´t wait to re-read it and share Joeys story with the world. If you haven’t read this book, read it. This is a book everyone needs to read at least once in their life.
