High Achiever

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All of the opinions are my own and this did not affect my review in any way.
Nonfiction is not a genre I typical reach for, I tend to find it very repetitive and honestly I a little bit boring at times. The only reason I read this book was because a copy was sent to me for review and I am beyond happy I gave it a chance because this book might have just become my favorite book of 2023.
High Achiever is Tiffany Jenkins’ memoir as she was detoxing behind bars at a Florida prison, incarcerated on 20 felony charges. The memoir flashes back in time to the events that led to Tiffany's imprisonment (during the time of her active addiction, Tiffany was dating and living with a cop), and moves forward to her eventual sobriety.
Like I said this book became an all-time favorite for me, it is raw and heartbreaking and it honestly reads like a nonfiction book. Jenkins has a fantastic way of telling a story and making it not only entertaining but also believable. The book is told in multiple timelines which adds suspense and stakes to the story. We follow Tifanny in prison as she tries to survive while also detoxing and we also follow her before her bad decisions landed her in prison, while she was an active addict. The writing style is fantastic, it is simple yet elegant and it worked fantastic for what the author was trying to achieve.
My favorite part about this book was how honest it was, the author does not try to make excuses for herself or paint herself as the victim, she tells is how it is, the good and the bad. I really appreciated this honesty from her because I was able to deeply connect to the story and actually feel some empathy to what she went through.
This book is hard to read, nothing is off-limits to the author, she tells her story bluntly and it was truly inspiring. I think this is a most read for everyone, I think everyone can get something out of this story and hopefully this book will inspire many people to make a change before they make the mistakes the author did.
Overall I am beyond happy I read this book, High Achiever is an ppen, honest, real, blunt, eye-opening, and amazing book about what is means to be an addict, how far some addicts are willing to go and what really goes on inside of an addicts mind when they commit actions that some of us might consider selfish or stupid. This was truly an amazing read and I know I will re-read this book multiple times because of how moved I was by the story.
