The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

By V.E Schwab

5 stars

This book took everyone by storm and became one of my most anticipated reads. I have been dying to read it and when I finally found I copy I knew I couldn’t waste any time to start reading it. As expected, this book became one of my favorite reads of all time and I’m so mad it took me so long to finally get to it.

In the Invisible Life of Addie la Rue, we follow Addie, who in 1714 in a moment of desperation makes a bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

For me, this book is a masterpiece, it is my first V.E. Schwab book and it certainly won’t be the last. First of all, the writing style is absolutely fantastic, it is simple enough for you to understand everything that is happening, but it is also beautifully complex that adds a lyrical tone to it. This book is written in dual timelines which for me works perfectly, in the first timeline we follow Addie in 1714 just as she made the deal and she is trying to discover what this new life entails. In the second timeline we follow Addie in present day as she tries to find out how is it possible that someone remembers her. Both timelines are phenomenal and add depth to the story.

Next, talking about the characters we first have Addie, Addie is a great character, granted she is no my favorite, she is flawed and complex and stubborn at times. I had a hard time relating and connecting to Addie because the life she so desperately wanted to run away from didn’t sound so bad for me, however if that life wasn’t for her I understood why she would want to run away from it. We then have Henry, who for me is the best character in the book, Henry is sweet and thoughtful and just wants to feel loved. He was very well developed and I enjoyed getting to know him. We finally have Luc which I think is fantastic, the author did a fantastic job in describing “the devil” and I could totally buy into is train of thought and why he did what he did. The secondary characters are great as well and they really complement the story.

Finally, the plot is outstanding, the book begins slow and the author takes her time in describing how Addie came to be, we get beautiful descriptions of the town she lived in and it is a great backstory for the character. As the book progresses, the plot quickens, we are trying to figure out why Henry can remember Addie and what this entails and by the end of the book there is shocking revelation after another. Like I said his book is close to a masterpiece.

Overall The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a beautiful story about survival, loneliness and the power of a name. It has everything I need in a good book; great characters, fantastic writing and an outstanding plot; and so much more. I know everyone has read this book but if by any chance you haven’t, I don’t know what you are waiting for to pick this one up.
