THE HATE YOU GIVE

The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

5 Stars

“Good-byes hurt the most when the other person is already gone”

I honestly have no excuse as to why it took me so long to read this book. This book came out in 2017 and was one of the best books of that year. Even though it took me 4 years to finally I am so happy I did. This book became one of my favorite books of all time and I strongly believe it will become a classic and a must read for everyone.

In The Hate You Give we follow sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, who moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.

This book is a masterpiece, not only is it beautifully written, the themes it touches upon are so important. Honestly there is nothing I can write in this review that hasn’t already been said. This book is so important, so needed, so beautiful and so well written. This book although beautiful, it is not pretty, it is honest, heartbreaking, thought provoking and it shines light on topics that are so important in today’s political world.

Aside from the incredibly important political topics this book touches upon. The Hate You Give has an amazing cast of characters. The main character Starr, is such a powerful character, we get to see her grow under less than ideal circumstances and see her become such a fierce and strong woman. Her dad, Maverick, stole my heart, he such a strong yet sweet father and the love he has for his children filled my heart. All of the other characters are amazing as well and Angie Thomas was able to make them feel flawed yet real.

Overall, like I said, this book is a masterpiece. This book made me cry, laugh, get angry and made me think. I couldn’t possibly ask for more and I am so happy I read it. The Hate You Give is such an important and relevant book to this day and even though I am pretty late to the hype party for this book I still think that everyone who hasn’t picked it up yet, must.
