The Glass Castle
By Jeannette Walls
5 stars
For about 4 years my parents have been trying to get me to read this book, and I finally listened. All I have to say is that I wished I would have listened sooner. This is definitely one of the best book I have read.
The Glass Castle is a memoir which is a tender, moving tale of unconditional love in a family that, despite its profound flaws, gave the author the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.
I am not a huge fan of memoirs, I don’t read memoirs that often and to be honest I have no interest. So when I decided to pick this book up I really had no expectations and I had no idea that I was about to read one of the most heart wrenching and impactful book ever.
This book is written in a way in were the author just wants to tell her story, Jeannette Walls just wants to reader to see what it was like growing up in a family like hers and she manages to make you feel empathy and in the end you are able to picture what it was like growing up in a loving but dysfunctional family.
I think this memoir is a must read for everyone, the writing is beautiful, the story is both heartbreaking and inspirational and the overall tone is emotional. I cannot say that I fully understand what the author went through, I was blessed to grow up in a loving ad stable family, but even though I cannot fully understand I can empathized with the author and her story.
Overall I believe this is an outstanding memoir that everyone should read at least once in order to be more sensible towards those who are different from us. This is definitely one of my favorite books of all time and I will be thinking about it for a really long time.
