When I was approached by the author to read and review this collection I was instantly drawn to the idea, I had been on the lookout for good poetry lately and The Art of Sidewalking was just what I needed at the time.
The Art of Sidewalking is a collection of free verse poems written about marvelous moments, often disguised as mundanities, that reveal themselves only when one takes the time to slow down, look up, and notice the fine details of the world around them.
What I liked most about this collection was how the author took every day mundane things we often take as granted, such as stop lights, a microwave oven and even the ceiling fan, a turned them into something beautiful, something worth paying attention to. The prose is simple, what you read is what you get and for me that works marvelously, I loved getting insight into simple things that maybe have a deeper meaning to some people and I adored finding out that some simple things have a deeper meaning for me as well.
I have always been a firm believer that there is beauty in the simple fine moments of life, that is we take a moment to look closer you will see something that wasn’t there before. The author has an astonishing way of writing, I believe he manages to portray beautiful and heart wrenching images in a few words. I was also very into the images at the beginning of each chapter, I think the set the mood and tone of the poems in each chapter perfectly and it was a nice touch that made the collection feel more personal.
As with every poetry collection, there were some poems I connected with more and there were others that didn’t apply to me, but overall, as a collection I was pleasantly surprised. I was really moved by this collection, each poem made me feel something and I was able to relate to most of them. I was truly blown away by the depth and writing of each poem, each word served a purpose and I was very quickly emotionally invested in it.
Overall, this is a strong poetry collection that gives light to the simple moments in life and I love how the author showed us that if we just take the time to stop and look a little closer you can find beauty in every day things. I really can´t wait to read more from this author.
