For a long time I had heard great things about this book, it was a very hyped book and it was awarded the Walter Dean Myers Award and Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Fiction. However I had no idea what this book was about until I started reading it, and I am so happy I read it because this book turned out to be one of my favorites of all time.
This novel takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother.
This novel is incredibly powerful and beautifully written. I am not very into reading books in verse but this one really worked for me I couldn’t stop listening and I was actually speechless after I finished reading it. This book I heartbreaking, and important and everyone should read it.
The emotion the author puts into his book, the emotion you hear in his voice when he is narrating the book is so powerful and will actually give you goosebumps. I felt connected to Will, his grief, his emotions, his desire for revenge, I felt it. I was there in the elevator alongside Will. This book is important, it deals with gun violence, loss of a love one and so much more and I think it is essential that everyone reads it in order have a greater picture of what some people have to go through in their day to day lives.
The book is short, I can see that, but I can also see that with a longer book, it would have lost the feeling of urgency. The fact that it was so short made it way more powerful, because we don’t have hours to make life changing decisions like that, most of our decisions are made in a spam of seconds.
I really liked the audio book especially because it was narrated by the author, however after looking at a physical copy I would have loved to read it physically, just because of the way the book was laid.
Overall, I am dying to read more from the author, this book was truly astonishing and if you plan to read one book this year this one should definitely be on your list.
