“You would soon learn that love made you worry, but it also made you beautiful”
I bought this book on a whim, not really knowing what it was about. I had heard it was a book about falling in and out of love so I was immediately intrigued, however, I was not prepared to find one of my favorite books of all time. This book is a masterpiece.
In Open Water we follow two young people who meet at a pub in South East London. Tentatively, tenderly, they fall in love. But two people who seem destined to be together can still be torn apart by fear and violence.
This book is so much more than just about love, it’s about figuring out who you are, finding your place in a world that both celebrates and rejects you, it´s a profoundly sensitive portrait of both romantic and self-love. I was blown away by the depth of this book and I do believe this is a stunning piece of art.
The writing style is both simple and lyrical, Caleb Azumah has a way of saying things that in just a few pages capture and fill your heart. This book is so intimate and introspective, it’s beautifully written with prose that feels like poetry at times. This book is short, and in just under 160 pages the author manages to tell us one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking love stories of all time.
When I finished reading this book I was left speechless, in my opinion, this is one of the most essential debut novels of recent years. It is a beautifully written novel about love, being seen and being vulnerable and it definitely became one of my favorite books of all time.
Overall, Open Water started by being a book I picked on a whim and ended up being one of the most impactful books I have ever read. I will definitely be thinking about this novel for a very long time and I cannot wait to see what Caleb Azumah has in store for us. Truly outstanding, heartbreaking and heartwarming novel about the true depths of love.
