How Long Can a Dream Survive?

Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks

5 stars

“It´s because of you, after all, that I now believe in miracles”

Although I tend to love Nicholas Sparks films, I have come to the realization that that same love does not transgress to the books. However, I have noticed that when I don’t watch the movie before reading the book I tend to appreciate the books more. So when I found a copy of this book I knew I had to read it before the movie came out and boy was I taken by surprise by how much I loved this book.

Every Breath is a story about a chance encounter that becomes a touchstone for two vastly different individuals -- transcending decades, continents, and the bittersweet workings of fate.

I had no idea what this book was about when I started reading it, however, once I read the author´s note at the beginning of the book I knew I was about to read one of my favorite romance books of all time (and I was right). Every Breath is a heartfelt story about what it means to meet the right person for us at the wrong time, I love that kind of trope so it was no surprise when I ended up falling in love with this book, its characters and the story.

First, the setting, Nicholas Sparks is known for writing stories set in small towns across the United States, and I find that comforting and this book was no exception. This story is set in a small town on the beach and it was the perfect setting for this story. As you read this book you are able to perfectly picture the places the characters go to, you feel the warmth of the beach and what it entails. The setting is perfectly described to the last detail and it felt as though I was right there along the characters enjoying a day at the beach.

Second, the characters, both Hope and Tru are such pure and lovely characters it is impossible to not root for their love story. Tru emits such a pure and caring heart, and I love how much he cares about others, especially his son. Hope is such a strong, determined character and I couldn’t help but feel represented and seen by her. Both character have flaws, which makes it much more believable and heartwarming, however even with those flaws it is impossible not to noticed that they are perfect for each other. I usually tend to fall in love with Nicholas Sparks´ characters and Tru and Hope where no exception.

Finally, the plot, my favorite part of all. First of all the writing style is amazing, Nicholas Sparks has grown so much in terms of his writing style and word choice and it all felt perfect in this book. The plot is sweet and slow and the author takes his time to build a strong foundation for an even stronger love story. “Right person, wrong time” is a concept that has always drawn me in, because I do believe it to be true and possible, so reading a book that focuses mainly on that was refreshing and it had me even crying at some points.

Overall, it is safe to say that Every Breath has become my favorite book by Nicholas Sparks. It is a beautiful representation of the many aspects of love and it has us wondering how far we are willing to go in other to follow our hearts. What a masterpiece of a romance novel.
