Fangirl

By Rainbow Rowell

4 stars

When this book came out it took everyone by storm, everyone talked about Fangirl, people became obsessed with not only the book but specially the characters. I got this book by chance and the cover intrigued me enough to read it, being fully aware that this is a young adult book I went in with an open mind and ended up loving it.

In Fangirl we follow Cath, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.... But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she's really good at it. She and her twin, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

I wish I had read this book sooner, like I said I knew this book was young adult when I started reading it and although I did enjoy it I know a younger me would have absolutely adored it. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars was because unfortunately I couldn’t relate to Cath as much as everyone else seems to, however the rest of the characters and the story is so wholesome and cute and the author managed to perfectly portray what college is like for some people.

Like I mentioned before people fell in love with this book because of the characters. For me, the characters are 50/50 I wasn’t able to really connect or see myself represented fully in any of them but I did find some similarities sometimes. The main character Cath for me is a controversial kind, and I know people are going to be mad at me for saying this but I sometimes got so annoyed with Cath I had to take a break from reading. I understand, I really do, I understand that Cath has extreme social anxiety and that things that are normal for me are extremely hard for her, however I had a hard time relating to her (I can still appreciate how great of a character she is for other people). Wren was also a controversial one, although I tend to identify with her a little more she also got on my nerves a lot, especially her attitude to certain things. The MVP and my favorite character of the book has to be Levi, Levi is so wholesome I could melt, he had the biggest heart and it was a joy reading about him.

The writing style is fantastic, Rainbow Rowell did an excellent job in allowing us to be fully emerged in Cath´s mind and it truly was a pleasure to read this book. Although this book is warm, fluffy and lighthearted it also deals and talks about very serious topics, especially regarding mental health. I think the author did a fantastic job portraying these situations and the representation in this book is absolutely amazing. This book is definitely character driven but the few plot twist we get are well developed and make sense.

Overall this was a really good book that I wished I had read while I was a little younger. Although I hate to admit I had a problem with the main character I get where the author is coming from and I think it is very beautiful to have such strong representation because even though I couldn’t relate to Cath I am sure a lot of people do. Everyone and their mother has read this book but if you haven’t, I really recommend that you do.
