I purchased this book because of the hype it received on Booktube a few years ago, I knew it dealt with a sensitive topic such as a school shooting and I was very interested to see what the author could do with the idea. After I read this book I was happy I gave it a chance however it did not by any means blow me away or exceed my expectations.
This is Where it Ends is a multiple perspective book telling a minute-to-minute account of a school shooting in Alabama.
I believe this book is a must read for everyone because it deals with such a sensitive topic and tough issues that we must know more about. And although this book deals with such important topics it barely scratched the surface of all the potential it had to become a masterpiece. I enjoyed this book, it was the first book I had ever read on the topic of school shootings and I think it was a good place to start however, even though I really enjoyed the book I was expecting it to destroy me and unfortunately it didn’t even make me cry.
The writing was good, not exceptional, I enjoyed the multiple POV´s, I think it gave the book more dimension and it allowed the reader to better picture what was happening in the story and what the stakes were for each character. However, I would have loved to see a POV from the shooter and unfortunately that never happened so I was feeling like I was missing some part of the shooters motivation or origin story to be fully emotionally invested in what was happening.
Overall I have mixed feelings about this book, on one part I felt it was underdeveloped and that some of the character needed a little bit more of depth in order to work for me and on the other hand I was hooked by this book since page one. I thinks this is a must read book that should teach us something about a very sensitive topic.
